OUR STORY

About the Westchester Warriors

Since 2016, the Westchester Warriors Youth Hockey program has partnered with Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), to fight children’s cancer.

Under the guidance of co-founders Luis Panchame, Denis Dufresne and Ron Vitale, the Warriors proudly advocate hockey as a conduit for community enrichment, including aiding children courageously seeking to overcome health obstacles.

This inspirational group’s kindness has been transformative: They have raised over $$600,000 to date to fund a new consolidated entrance named Westchester Warriors Way that leads to our cancer, blood-disorder and bone-marrow transplant center for young oncology patients.

Unfortunately, the fight against pediatric cancer continues, and we need your help now more than ever. Your donation today will be earmarked for the Cellular and Tissue Engineering Laboratory (CTEL) within the Children and Adolescent Cancer and Blood Disease Center at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital.

Under the leadership of Mitchell S. Cairo, MD, Chief, Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, and Stem Cell Transplantation at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, CTEL creates and provides patient-specific therapies for our pediatric oncology patients.

Your donation today will help us advance this vital program– and help so many young patients in need of personalized, cutting-edge care for patients and their families. Click here to learn more.

What are we fighting for?

Westchester Warriors - What are we fighting for?

We are absolutely stunned at the hustle of the teams this year, already at $55,471.67 before anyone has touched the ice.

I wanted to share a bit about exactly what the teams are fundraising for.  These funds will support the Cellular and Tissue Engineering Laboratory at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital – a state-of-the-art medical laboratory specializing in tailored cellular, gene and regenerative therapy for our pediatric cancer and blood disorder patients.

About Dr. Mitchel Cairo and the Cellular and Tissue Engineering Laboratory (CTEL):

·         CTEL is part of the Childhood and Adolescent Cancer and Blood Diseases Center at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital.

·         Cellular therapy for childhood cancer and blood disorders has become one of the most promising areas of medical research. The promise of unlocking treatments and cures to rare disorders by harnessing the power of the patient’s own body renews the efforts of Dr. Cairo’s team to lead advances that save lives while minimizing unwanted side effects.

·         CTEL consists of over 40 scientists who, paraphrasing Dr. Cairo’s words, “provide a la carte therapy, specialized for the patient that puts the patient first and leaves no stone unturned; promising the best long-term health of the patient.”

·         CTEL advances treat diseases such as:

o   Acute and chronic leukemias

o   Lymphomas

o   Brain tumors

o   Solid tumors (neuroblastoma, sarcomas, Wilms Tumor, hepatic and germ cell tumors)

o   Hemoglobinopathies (sickle cell disease and thalassemia)

o   Bone marrow failure syndromes (aplastic anemia and Fanconi anemia)

o   Immunodeficiencies (SCID and CGD)

o   Bleeding and clotting disorders (hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, idopathic thrombocytopenia etc.)

o   Lymphohistiocytic disorders
